Fantasizing About Love: How BL Dramas Affect the LGBT Community
I wrote a paper in Korean for my senior capstone that examines the influence of BL (Boys’ Love) dramas have on gay fans and their potential influence to reshape societal perceptions of the LGBT community. BL dramas, which center on romantic relationships between male characters, have gained significant popularity across Asia and globally, driven by platforms such as Viki and other OTT streaming platforms. Traditionally, BLs were crafted predominantly to female audiences through romanticized and whimsical narratives; however, recent BL dramas have gravitated toward more authentic and relatable depictions of gay relationships.
The paper contrasts two works, Semantic Error and Love in the Big City, to illustrate the varied approaches to making a BL. Semantic Error epitomizes a quintessential BL drama, imbued with light-hearted romance that avoids the heavy societal issues of being gay in South Korea. In contrast, Love in the Big City adopts a realistic approach, delving into the multifaceted realities of gay life in South Korea, including systemic discrimination, identity crises, and the challenges of same-sex relationships in a conservative society. This comparison highlights BLs nuanced development.

This study highlights the transformative potential of BL dramas to serve as a medium of emotional support and representation for gay fans while simultaneously challenging societal norms, and amplifying visibility of the LGBT community in South Korea and beyond.
