Empathy, Taking Risks

International Experience

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to explore some truly remarkable places that have left an indelible mark on my life. Each destination brought its own unique culture, lessons, and memories. Here’s a glimpse into my time in China, Guam, and South Korea.

During my four months in Guilin, I immersed myself in learning Chinese and discovering the the local culture. I often found myself navigating stereotypes about myself and the locals. These moments gave me the chance to share my military background, my passion for learning, and the diversity within the African American community. It was challenging at times, but it felt rewarding to break down misconceptions one conversation at a time.

Guam was a place where my military career as a Hull Technician truly shaped me. Between rigorous responsibilities, maintaining life-saving equipment, and reforming programs that impacted my team’s readiness, I learned what it meant to work under pressure while staying mission-focused. I also embraced the Chamorro culture, learning about their traditions, history, and deep connection to the land and ocean. Guam was a reminder of the strength of small communities and the importance of resilience.

Spending five months in Seoul was another leap into cultural and linguistic immersion. Korea wasn’t just about learning; it was about: living, making connections, understanding different perspectives, and gaining insight into both modern and traditional Korean culture. I was also struck by the country’s evolving views on topics like LGBTQ+ representation, which I’m currently exploring in my academic work.
